Defeating the stubbornness

Defeating the stubbornness

Psalm 81:10-12 stubborness trusting in God

By Stephanie Parker

"I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it. “But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices." -Psalm 81:10-12

Today I pray for the stubbornness of my heart and the hearts of those I love. God longs to fill our lives but we have to choose to let go! The Israelites witnessed, first hand, God free them from slavery, part the waters of the sea, send food from heaven like rain, and make water flow from a rock. AND YET... they still chose their will and their way over God's. Why? Because of the stubbornness of their hearts.

My heart breaks as I read the above verse because you can hear the longing and sorrow in God's voice when he says, "Open wide your mouth and I will fill it." All we have to do is open our mouths. But it's a choice. God so longs to provide for us, to love us, but our hearts have become stubborn and hardened by our own selfish desires. God is longsuffering and patient with us but eventually he will say, "ok, have it your way." Because of the Israelites stubbornness, they died in the desert with the promise land within reach.

So I ask you, what do you stand to miss out on by holding on to the stubbornness of your heart? Sure, you might have your way, in the moment... but how's that really workin' for ya? How is it affecting those around you? Open your mouth... He's waiting to fill it.
